January 20-21, 2012
What do we mean when we talk about student success? Are students, faculty, administrators and government talking about the same thing? How can we ensure that our students are getting the education they need to achieve their goals, succeed in the workforce, and be the citizens and leaders of tomorrow?
The Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Association’s 2012 Conference – Ensuring Student Success – will seek to answer these questions and more. Join us for two days of insightful presentations and engaging discussion with speakers and participants from universities, research institutes, government, and the private sector in Canada, the United States, and Europe. The conference will critically explore the idea of student success by unpacking the meaning of the term, examining the various ideas advanced to improve the student experience, and highlighting the structural realities that may help or hinder this goal. Like previous OCUFA conferences, a diversity of views will be sought in each of the keynote and panel sessions.
Sessions and speakers include:
- The realities of Ontario’s university system: Are we setup for student success? – Tony Chambers (OISE)
- Higher education beyond the university: Open learning and the challenge to postsecondary institutions – Alec Couros (University of Regina)
- Different approaches to student success: Are today’s students ready to succeed? – Ken Coates (University of Saskatchewan and author of ‘Campus Confidential’) and Arshad Ahmad (President of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education)
- The promise and challenge of online learning – Maxim Jean-Louis (President & CEO, Contact North), Mark Jones (Queen’s University), and John Rinderle (Carnegie Mellon University Open Learning Initiative)
- Student success: The faculty view – Tricia Seifert (OISE), Steve Joordens (UTSC), and Susan Hill (Director of the First Nations Studies program, UWO)
- Academic libraries and Student Success – Elaine Fairey (Simon Fraser University), Michael Ridley (former CIO and Chief Librarian, University of Guelph), Mark Robertson (York University)
- What do students really want? – Jon Pryce (Wilfrid Laurier Univeristy, Thomas Posie (Ryerson University), and Liana Salvador (Ryerson University)
