It’s time for job security, fair pay, and benefits for contract faculty!

Too many contract faculty have to reapply for their jobs every term, are hired to teach courses for which they are paid less than their full‐time tenure‐stream colleagues, and lack access to benefits.

It’s time to recognize the contribution contract faculty make in our university community and in the classroom. Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions.

Job security, fair pay, and benefits for contract faculty will deliver fairness for workers and protect the high‐quality education our students deserve.

TOGETHER WE CAN WIN JOB SECURITY FOR CONTRACT FACULTY AND IMPROVE OUR UNIVERSITIES

OCUFA has done the math and submitted recommendations to the Ontario government to adequately fund our universities and create good jobs for contract faculty.

OCUFA RECOMMENDS:

  • Increase funding to Ontario’s universities by compounding annual increases of 11.75% to for five years to reach the Canadian average
  • Increase student assistance and turn loans into grants
  • Review the university funding model
  • Reverse performance-based funding

How would these recommendations improve our universities

  1. Increase funding to Ontario’s universities by compounding annual increases of 11.75% to for five years to reach the Canadian average
To hire more contract faculty into full-time permanent positions, lower the student-to-faculty ratio and create more good jobs on campus.
  2. Increase student assistance and turn loans into grants
No student should graduate with crushing student debt. Increasing student financial assistance and turning grants into loans will make university accessible for all students .
  3. Review the university funding model
Demand from domestic students for university spaces will steadily rise over the next decade.
A review of Ontario’s funding formula is necessary to support growing domestic demand.
  4. Reverse the implementation of performance-based funding
To reduce red tape, scrap the cumbersome performance-based funding model.

Resources

February 28, 2024 is OCUFA’s contract faculty social media day of action. This is a day for contract faculty and allies to come together to support better working conditions for contract faculty and other precariously employed workers in the postsecondary sector. This year, we want to build support for OCUFA’s provincial lobbying demands that support good jobs for contract faculty. We are asking the provincial government for more public funding to fix issues with our public universities, specifically precarious work. Solidarity Is Our Strength Campaign

Every year, OCUFA’s Contract Faculty Committee hosts a social media day of action to build momentum for #fairness4CF. In 2023, our goal was to showcase the solidarity between tenured faculty, students, and contract faculty on campuses across the province–and we succeeded!
